Japanese researchers say ozone effective in neutralising Coronaviruses

A recent study by researchers at Fujita Health University has shown that low concentrations of ozone can neutralise Coronavirus particles. This potentially heralds a new way for hospitals to disinfect examination rooms and waiting areas, limiting the spread of Coronaviruses and other infectious airborne diseases.

What has this study shown?

The Fujita Health University scientists report that they have proven that ozone gas in concentrations of 0.05 to 0.1 parts per million (ppm) could kill the virus. This level is completely safe for humans and provides an effective solution to killing viruses and bacteria.

The experiment used an ozone generator in a sealed chamber with a sample of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. When exposed to the low level of ozone for 10 hours, the potency of the virus declined by more than 90%.

The emergence of ozone disinfection

Ozone disinfection could be another effective disinfection solution in applications where there are lots of people, such as universities, sports stadiums, and transport. BSG technology also aims to provide a safe and effective disinfection solution in both commercial and residential settings. Alongside our UV light, photo plasma, and ionisation products, our ozone technology is currently being used by thousands of people to help improve quality of life and protect against airborne pathogens.

Ozone is created by the reaction of oxygen and UV light. It is widely recognized for its ability to break down and destroy unwanted organic compounds, germs, bacteria, viruses, odours, and micro-contaminants.

It has been used to safely disinfect drinking water for well over a century and is approved for multiple foodservice applications by the US FDA. More recent research has shown its efficacy in air disinfection, and the recent Fujita Health University study proves it to be a safe and efficient weapon against the spread of Coronaviruses.
